Artist Statement
As an artist my aesthetic is typically whimsical in nature, a little surreal, and delicately detailed. My artistic foundation was built on drawing and watercolor painting, but my direction has recently shifted toward sculpture. I use porcelain for most of my sculptures, and their time-intensive details are stylistically reminiscent of my illustrative two-dimensional work. While not all of my work consists of functional art objects, I do have a small ceramics business built upon the success of my original product design: the Happy Kitty Mug, among other creative products.
My work is heavily inspired by the great Western surrealists, but Japanese art and aesthetics also influence my work in subtle ways. I typically paint or sculpt stylized animals, humans, and imaginary creatures. While my subjects are often very cute, they also embody a humorous grotesqueness. Threaded throughout my body of work is a distaste for traditional concepts of beauty, and a constant effort to challenge them.
